Osram has come out with a white LED that provides 1000 lumens of light! That’s brighter than a 50W halogen bulb. It’ll be interesting to see how these LEDs can begin to enter new markets. The device actually packs six small LEDs into a single package to obtain this output. (via Physorg.com)

Dilbert – The Knack
I love this video clip, from the Dilbert TV cartoon.
Using LEDs as daytime running lights (DRLs)
The one-off modified Ferrari that Pininfarina recently built for a well to-do customer uses some neat white LEDs from Osram as daytime runnings lights. As this technology develops, we’ll be seeing this more and more. I may be wrong, but I think the upcoming Audi R8 supercar will be the first production vehicle to use LEDs as headlights. Dean Kamen: Designing for the Third World – 1/8/2007 – Design News
Design News has an mp3 interview with Dean Kamen, where he talks about designing for the Third World. If you’re not familiar with Kamen, check out his company DEKA Research. He’s most known for inventing the Segway, but has really done wonders for trying to bring science and technology to the masses, through the FIRST program. He comes across as being one of those exciting, intelligent engineers you’d give anything to work with. Lots of people idolize rock stars and football players, as for me, my idols and heros are people like Dean Kamen and Steve Wozniak. I guess that just makes me an engineer. 🙂
You can find the interview at this link.
